Raising Our Lanterns For Virginia Tech [
Apr 18 2007
]

icklehoot
This is a copy of the email I sent our earlier today to various listservs. I realize that many people are mourning the events at Virginia Tech.. this is just something that I thought we could do as a student body to show our support.

I apologize in advance for the reptition on your f-lists.

----------

In the face of great tragedy we are often left without guidance on how to proceed, even when our hearts urge us to act. Yet physical distance between the catastrophe at Virginia Tech does not mean we are empathetically distanced from the sense of loss the collegiate psyche is suffering. It was not just a loss for those with personal ties to Blacksburg, but a loss for all of us.

In memoriam of Virginia Tech, we will be holding a vigil on the Senior Steps at 6pm tonight, and we would encourage the entire Bryn Mawr community to join us. To show our support. To help heal.

Students, please bring your lanterns... so we can raise them in honor of the Hokie spirit.

So I would like a single next year (which I'm sure absolutely no one else wants, right?). My number is 50 so yay! but I'm also a freshman. So which dorms would give me the best chances of getting a single? Erdman obviously, but what about the others?

Does anyone know when we can access our grades? The academic calendar says that they were due yesterday at noon, so they should presumably be online sometime in the near future, though I'm not sure how soon.

It's That Time of Year Again! [

I thought it might be helpful, since finals are looming, for some of us to share tips/advice for making it through finals. Stress relievers, advice on how to plug through papers or just plain sanity-saving tips.

So here are some tips off the tip of my head:
1. Breathe -- taking a moment to find your zen spot might be the difference between a meltdown and finishing that last page.
2. Begin studying/researching asap -- starting earlier gives you more time to digest and process the information, and as "exciting" as cram sessions are...in the long run, you'll come out ahead
3. Drink water -- while coffee and Red Bull have become nearly analogous to "all nighter", I've found I stay awake longer and remain more coherent if I jug good ol' H20
4. Go on walks -- a quick 5 minute walk around campus is a good way to clear your head!
5. Remember that you aren't alone -- we're all suffering from finalitis; just go to Guild at 3am once 24 hour computing starts and you'll see what I mean. XD

Hey! I wanted to remind everyone to come to The Tunes concert on Friday night at 9:30. It's going to be off the hook! The Tunes is unlike any other a cappella group you may have heard. Not only is their sound unique and exquisite, but they reinvent many of the songs you thought you knew with a funk and style all their own! They're the only bi-co, co-ed a cappella group, and are damn proud of it.
Featuring 4 newbies allegedly claimed by GQ to be the 4 hottest people in the world and a bunch of new songs (we mean it, there are actually new songs this time), this event will be, well, eventful. Come get intoxicated with some ambrosia-like music truly fit for the gods. It's at 9:30 in Lunt Basement on Friday night.

Go. Live. Love.

Credit/No Credit first semester freshman year? [
Nov 29 2006
]

aurelia_star
Hey there!

My name is Emily and I'm class of '07. I'm on the Curriculum Committee, and tonight we discussed making the first semester Pass/Fail, as Swarthmore, MIT, CalTech, and Johns Hopkins do. (Students would still have those four C/NC choices for their other 3.5 semesters) We heard a lot of arguments for and against this, but we want student and alumnae input!

So, what do you think?? Good idea? Bad idea? Reservations? Comment here or email me at ealewis AT brynmawr DOT edu!

Thanks!

~Emily

so i need to find a place to get a cheap haircut in the bryn mawr area, preferably in walking distance, as i have no access to a car. where is the closest, cheapest place? i'm hoping to find a supercuts or great clips type place. i'm not picky. this is the main line, though, so i don't know how likely i am to find one in the area.

thoughts?

thanks!

Deftones fans? [

Hey guys.
Got a bit of a weird situation.
A friend of mine and I were planning on going to the Deftones concert at the Electric Factory in Philly this Saturday, but I have um, a rather pressing other engagement called Richard III that I didn't factor in. Stupid, I know, but what can you do.
Anyone want a ticket? I'd take twenty for it, which is a pretty good deal all things considered. My friend is still going, he'll even pick you up from Bryn Mawr, and take you into Philly and back.
What's not to love?
The concert starts at eight oclock, so you'll probably be back in plenty of time to go to any party that might be going on that night.
Takers?
If you're interested, email me at aseidman@brynmawr.edu
Thanks!
Have a good one!

iTunes = Great For Music, Bad For Bandwidth [
Nov 22 2006
]

icklehoot
Dear iTunes users:

Smokey The Bear Says: You too can prevent lag problems... by closing iTunes. :D

Yes, being able to share music with you friends over iTunes is amazing. It's sweet. Rock on.
But if you aren't at your computer, why leave iTunes open? By leaving streaming media (like iTunes, youtube, winmedia, etc.) open, you're sucking up bandwidth. There is a very, *very* limited amount of bandwidth that is allocated for streaming media through the BMC network pipelines. So leaving iTunes open when you aren't using it is a problem because it's bandwidth you don't really need, aaaand that some of us need to have for our classes and/or thesis.

Another helpful thing, for when you -are- using iTunes.. notice who's libraries you're sharing with. Are you actually listening to Jammin' Janice's Playlist? No? Then my friend, unhinge yourself from her playlist, be free! ...since by remaining connected to her library, you are also sucking up a ton o' da network.

Little background snippet from Guild.Collapse )

i greatly encourage/plead/beg that people spread the word, since the overuse of bandwidth is starting to get the network admin spazzin' out

xposted on other bmc communities.. sorry for the spam on your flists

Lots of blue lantern love from your sister class,

Lantern Night [
Sep 30 2006
]

anorwegianwood
So, about Lantern Night...I'm pyrophobic. As in, I get nervous around birthday candles. I've never even lit a match. And being around hundreds of lit lanterns that you pick up WITHOUT LOOKING...we're talking panic attack here. So I absolutely want no part of it. I still really like the symbolism behind the lanterns, though, so do you have to participate to get your lantern? Are there ever extenuating circumstances?
